ICAR developed two rice varieties 'DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala)' and 'Pusa DST Rice 1'.
These varieties were developed using the CRISPR-Cas technology.
No foreign DNA is incorporated hence they are not genetically modified.
Scientists from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and Indian Rice Research Institute, Hyderabad, developed these varieties.
Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that the varieties will increase yield by 30%.
This 21st century rice variety will reduced greenhouse gases by 20%.
ICAR officials stated that the seeds will be available to farmers in two years.
The rice varieties aim to reduce methane emissions, save water & boost paddy production.
India became the first country to produce genome edited rice variety.
