A study by Michigan State University showed that brown rice can be harmful.
This is because brown rice contains higher levels of inorganic arsenic compared to white rice.
It's consumption can lead to health risks especially among infants and children under 5 years.
Researchers found that in rice grown globally, 53% total arsenic in white rice was inorganic.
In brown rice, 65% of the total arsenic was inorganic.
Inorganic arsenic is classified as a carcinogen.
Brown rice exposure can also lead to skin lesions, gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
Senior investigator, Felicia Wu, John A said that the research was necessary to acknowledge importance of food safety & nutrition.
Experts advise consuming brown rice in moderation & follow mindful preparation.
The study was published in the Journal of Risk Analysis.
