PepsiCo Inc. has decided to acquire the remaining 50% stake in Sabra Dipping Company LLC (Sabra) and PepsiCo-Strauss Fresh Dips & Spreads International GmbH (Obela), becoming the sole owner of both entities.
Sabra and Obela are joint ventures equally owned by PepsiCo and Strauss Group. They were established to produce, distribute, and sell refrigerated dips and spreads.
The Sabra venture is headquartered in New York and serves the U.S. and Canada, while the Obela venture is located in Geneva and operates in Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico.
PepsiCo has dedicated more than 15 years to the fresh dips market, establishing Sabra and Obela as 50/50 joint ventures with the Strauss Group in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Sabra has emerged as a top hummus brand, boasting nearly $400 million in retail sales in the U.S.
This transaction will allow PepsiCo to further evolve its portfolio and enhance innovation, creating more products that cater to the increasing demand for healthier options among North American consumers.
As we enhance our food offerings and provide consumers with more options for various occasions, our goal is to satisfy the increasing demand for healthier choices and convenient on-the-go products, stated Steven Williams, CEO of PepsiCo Foods North America.
Nutritious and straightforward items like refrigerated dips and spreads are a category we’ve been eager to grow in the U.S. and Canada. We appreciate our long-standing and successful partnership with the Strauss Group and are excited about this new chapter for the Sabra and Obela brands, as well as for PepsiCo’s food portfolio.
PepsiCo noted that the transactions are subject to standard closing conditions and are anticipated to be finalized by the end of 2024.
