Mars Is Investing $5 Million to Create the Perfect Peanut — and It's Already Yielding Results

Mars has launched the "Mars Protect the Peanut Plan," a $5 million, five-year initiative to safeguard global peanut supply against climate change, pests, and disease. The plan aims to develop resilient peanut varieties that can withstand environmental challenges, ensuring food security for millions of families worldwide.

The Problem: Crop Losses and Food Insecurity

Currently, up to 30% of peanuts are lost due to crop damage, resulting in significant economic losses for farmers. Climate change exacerbates this issue, threatening the reliability of global peanut supply. As a major peanut buyer, Mars purchases over 300 million pounds annually for its brands, including M&M's and Snickers.

The Solution: Genomic Science and Collaboration

The Mars Protect the Peanut Plan will utilize advanced genomic science to develop hardier peanut varieties. Collaborations with institutions like the University of Georgia's Wild Peanut Lab, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, and USDA Agricultural Research Service will drive innovation. This initiative builds on Mars' decade-long investment in peanut research, including mapping the peanut genome.

Breakthroughs and Results

Researchers have already developed resilient peanut varieties that boost crop yields by up to 30%. One notable variety, Sempre Verde, thrives in tough conditions without fungicides. According to Dr. Soraya Bertioli, senior research scientist at the University of Georgia, "Creating more resilient peanuts requires transformative science, discipline, and partnership."

A Long-Term Commitment

Mars' commitment to sustainability and food security is reflected in its Sustainable in a Generation plan. By investing in peanut research and development, Mars aims to protect the peanut supply chain and ensure a sustainable food source for future generations. Amanda Davies, Chief R&D, Procurement, and Sustainability Officer at Mars Snacking, emphasizes the importance of long-term investment and partnership in achieving this goal.
