ISRO Developing Lunar Lander Capable of Surviving 200 Days on the Moon

India's space program is taking another significant step toward long-duration lunar exploration. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in collaboration with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), is developing advanced technologies that could enable future lunar landers to survive on the Moon for up to 200 Earth days.
One of the greatest challenges faced by lunar missions is the extreme temperature variation on the Moon. During the lunar night, temperatures can fall below -180°C, creating harsh conditions that can damage electronics, batteries, and scientific instruments. Historically, many lunar landers and rovers cease operations after experiencing these prolonged periods of extreme cold.
To address this challenge, ISRO and DAE are working on an artificial heating system designed to maintain operational temperatures during the lunar night. The technology aims to protect critical onboard systems and significantly extend the lifespan of future lunar missions.
If successful, this advancement could enable landers to continue scientific observations, collect environmental data, and perform experiments for much longer durations than currently possible. Extended mission life would increase the scientific value of lunar exploration while reducing the need for frequent replacement missions.
The development is particularly important as India advances its long-term lunar exploration goals following the success of the Chandrayaan program. Longer-lasting lunar systems could support future robotic exploration, resource assessment, and eventually contribute to technologies needed for sustained human presence on the Moon.
