Himalayan Salt, Black Salt, Rock Salt and Indu Salt are not real low sodium salt alternatives

Low-sodium salt substitutes or LSSS are alternatives to table salt.

LSSS are not only low in sodium but they also contain potassium chloride.

According to a survey by the National Institute of Epidemiology, about 52% of big stores stock these substitutes.

Only 4% of the local grocery stores keep low sodium salt substitutes

This survey was cited by ICMR.

ICMR has initiated a move #PinchForAChange, which aims to improve healthier food choices.

WHO has recommended reducing sodium intake by 2 grams per day.

Low sodium salt substitutes help in lowering blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases.

Nephrologist, Rajan Ravichandran said that himalayan salt, black salt, senda namka and indupu are not actual alternatives.

They contain 90-95% sodium with magnesium and calcium.

Real salt substitutes contain 20-40% potassium chloride.

Use of LSSS is to promote the reduction of sodium intake & reduce risk of hypertension.
