FSSAI Set Standards for Non-Bovine Milk

What is Non-Bovine Milk ?

Non-bovine milk is referred to as the milk of animals excluding cows and buffaloes. Sheep, goat, camel, yak, and plant based milk are all examples of non-bovine dairy. A number of startup companies have now introduced dairy products made from non-bovine milk.

Many people are switching from bovine to non bovine dairy because of allergies, intolerance and demand for healthier options among the population.

FSSAI Standards for Non-Bovine Milk

FSSAI specifies standards for several types of milk including milk from different species. The requirements in the standard include total milk fat and solid-not-fat (SNF) content. The summary of the standards are mentioned below:

Buffalo Milk: Minimum milk fat is 6.0% and Minimum SNF is 9.0 %

Cow Milk: Minimum milk fat is 3.2% and Minimum SNF is 8.3 %

Sheep and Goat Milk: Minimum milk fat is 3.0% and Minimum SNF is 9.0 %

Camel Milk: Minimum milk fat is 2.0% and Minimum SNF is 6.0 %

The standards are set to ensure that dairy and dairy products are safe for human consumption, meet specify quality parameters and can be sold in the Indian market.
