On May 21, FSSAI has asked all commissioners to conduct enforcement drives to stop the use of ripening agents like calcium carbide.
Calcium carbide is injurious to health and may lead to serious health problems like ulcers, neurological issues or cancer.
The regulators also said to curb the use of synthetic colours or non-permitted wax coating.
Strict action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 will be taken if calcium carbide is found on premises or along fruit crates.
Authorities encouraged the use of safer alternatives like ethylene gas under controlled conditions.
The aim is to promote food safety & addressing the harmful effects of chemicals.
This step is a part of the nationwide enforcement drive for minimising chemical use.
