FSSAI accepts food-grade rPET as a food contact material in India.

PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate, commonly used for packaging.

FSSAI guidelines set clear quality, safety, and compliance standards in use of rPET as food contact material.

The aim is to convert post-consumer plastic into high quality food grade packaging.

Makarand Kulkarni, CEO of Revalyu, a leading brand in PET said that this step will open doors for F & B industries to adopt safer packaging.

Advanced recycling technologies like mechanical recycling, melt-in, paste-in, and chemical recycling will be used.

Recycled resin must undergo a challenge test, migration test and extraction test to ensure safety.

Tests must be carried out from NABL-accredited labs that comply with IS 12252, IS 9845, and IS 9833.

This move aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the food packaging sector and fulfill India's national sustainability goals.
